When astronomers detect that the Earth is about to pass through a belt of poisonous ether in space, Professor Challenger gathers his companions from previous adventures — the journalist Malone, the skeptical Professor Summerlee, and the adventurer Lord John Roxton — along with their wives, to face what he believes will be the end of all life on the planet. Sealed inside a room stocked with oxygen cylinders, the group watches through the windows as the effects of the poison spread across the world outside, forcing each of them to confront mortality, their relationships, and what a world without other people might mean.

Key Concepts

The novel is less concerned with hard science than with how people behave when convinced they are living through humanity's final hours — it uses the premise to satirise class assumptions, professional rivalries, and Edwardian manners even at the brink of apocalypse. It also reflects early twentieth-century fascination with astronomy and the idea of a fragile, contingent Earth suspended in a hostile universe.

About the Author

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a British writer and physician, born and trained in medicine in Edinburgh before turning to writing full-time. In his later years he became a prominent and often controversial public advocate for spiritualism.
