What It's About

Last Post is the fourth and concluding novel in Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End sequence. Set over the course of a few hours on a June day in the years following the First World War, it centres on Christopher Tietjens, now working as an antique furniture dealer, who lives quietly in a Sussex cottage with Valentine Wannop, unmarried and pregnant with his child. Sharing the household are Christopher's older brother Mark, left paralysed and unable to speak after a stroke, and Mark's French partner, Marie Léonie. Into this fragile domestic peace intrudes Christopher's estranged wife Sylvia, who continues to spread rumours about her husband even as the old world she represents crumbles around her.

Key Concepts

The novel is concerned with the slow, difficult process of rebuilding a life and an identity after the devastation of war. Ford uses a fragmented, time-shifting narrative technique, moving between characters' inner perspectives rather than following events in strict chronological order. Thematically, it continues the tetralogy's central preoccupation: the collapse of the old Edwardian social order — its codes of honour, class, and duty — and the uncertain, messier world emerging in its place. Ford himself was notably ambivalent about this final volume; he later said he had never liked it and had originally intended the sequence to end with the previous book, and Graham Greene omitted it altogether from his 1963 edition of the tetralogy.

About the Author

Ford Madox Ford (born Ford Hermann Hueffer) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor. He changed his name in 1919 in honour of his grandfather, the painter Ford Madox Brown. Ford served as an officer on the Western Front during the First World War, an experience that profoundly shaped his later fiction.
