The second novel in Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End tetralogy, set in and around a British army base camp at Rouen, France, in 1917. Captain Christopher Tietjens, a former civil servant and statistician now serving as an officer, is trying to move thousands of troops toward the front while contending with the chaos and cruelty of army bureaucracy. At the same time, his estranged wife Sylvia arrives determined to disrupt his life, and his jealous commanding officer, General Campion, adds further pressure. Tietjens finds himself caught between the demands of duty, an unravelling marriage, and a buried love for Valentine Wannop, all while facing an official inquiry that threatens his career.

Key Concepts

The novel dramatises the collapse of Edwardian order and codes of conduct under the pressure of total war, using war less as backdrop than as a force that exposes and destroys old certainties. Ford employs modernist techniques - fractured chronology, shifting points of view, and interior monologue - to convey psychological strain and the disorientation of trench-era warfare. Themes of class, institutional absurdity, and the private cruelties of marriage run alongside the public spectacle of military life.

About the Author

Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic, and editor. Born Ford Hermann Hueffer into an artistic family - his maternal grandfather was the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown - he later changed his name. He served in the British Army during the First World War, an experience that shaped much of his later fiction, and was an influential literary editor of his day.
