About This Book

What It's About

The fourth Lensman novel follows Kimball Kinnison, newly raised to the elite rank of Gray Lensman, as he takes the war against the criminal empire of Boskone into its most dangerous phase. Free to operate alone and outside normal command, Kinnison goes undercover to trace the galaxy-wide trade in addictive drugs back to its source, using it as a thread to unravel Boskone's hidden organisation. Alongside him are his fellow Lensmen, including the Velantian Worsel and the Rigellian Tregonsee, and Clarissa MacDougall, the nurse whose path keeps crossing his. Originally serialised in a pulp science fiction magazine, it is fast, large-scale adventure on an intergalactic canvas, driven by chases, infiltrations, and ever-larger space battles.

Key Concepts

The novel is built on the Lens, a telepathic device worn by the Galactic Patrol's elite that lets its bearer communicate across species and read minds, and that can only be worn by its rightful owner. Its central conflict is between civilisation, guarded by the Patrol, and Boskone, a secretive, ruthless power with its own hierarchy. Behind both lies a larger struggle between two ancient, god-like races, which gives the story a cosmic backdrop. The book is often cited as a defining example of early space opera. Critics have long noted its flat characterisation, near-invincible hero, dated social attitudes, and technical jargon, but it remains admired for its scale, pace, and imagination, and for the influence of its ideas on later science fiction.
