About This Book

What It's About

This short volume presents G. R. S. Mead's translation of, and commentary on, a vision of the Crucifixion drawn from the apocryphal Acts of John (also known as the Leucian Acts). In it, the disciple John perceives a mystical Cross of Light standing behind the physical crucifixion witnessed by the crowd below, and is told that the true meaning of Christ's suffering is not the outward event but an inner, spiritual reality. The book is the seventh in Mead's "Echoes from the Gnosis" series, a set of short introductions to gnostic and mystical writings of antiquity intended for readers without specialist training.

Key Concepts

Central to the text is the Gnostic distinction between the visible, "fleshly" Cross and an invisible "Cross of Light," reflecting a wider Gnostic tendency to separate the suffering, mortal Jesus from an impassible, divine Christ (a form of docetism). Mead connects the vision to the themes of his earlier volume on the Hymn of Jesus, presenting the Crucifixion as one stage in a larger mystic drama of descent and return.
