Description

Bealby is a book by H. G. Wells, first published in 1915. The story follows young Bealby, an overworked and frequently scolded servant boy employed by the demanding and socially ambitious Warmings. Longing for freedom from constant criticism and petty authority, he impulsively runs away and sets out across the English countryside. Along the way he encounters a mysterious wandering thinker whose unconventional ideas about society, authority, and personal freedom begin to reshape the boy’s understanding of the world. What begins as a simple escape turns into an unexpected journey of discovery.

Combining humour, social satire, and coming-of-age adventure, Wells uses the runaway boy’s experiences to explore class, independence, and the restless spirit of youth. Known for famous science fiction works such as The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine, Wells also wrote a number of lively social novels, and this one blends sharp observations about Edwardian society with an engaging adventure story. Readers interested in classic British literature, humorous early twentieth-century novels, and stories of youthful rebellion will find plenty to enjoy in Bealby.
