About This Book

What It's About

Astral City follows André Luiz, a physician who dies and wakes in confusion in a shadowy region called the umbral. After a period of disorientation, he is guided to Nosso Lar ("Our Home"), a vast spirit colony that functions as a way station and school for souls adjusting to life after death. Through his eyes, the book describes the colony's organisation, work, and daily routines, and sets out the spiritual laws he comes to understand as governing existence beyond the physical body.

Key Concepts

The book is a foundational text of Kardecist Spiritism, a belief system holding that spirits continue to learn and evolve after death and may reincarnate. Central themes include the idea of moral and spiritual progression through structured "colonies" in the afterlife, and the claim that thoughts and feelings of the living can affect the wellbeing of the dead. Xavier presented the work as having been produced through psychography (automatic writing), with André Luiz named as the dictating spirit rather than a living author.

About the Author

Chico Xavier (1910–2002) was a Brazilian medium and philanthropist widely regarded as the central figure in the spread of Spiritism across Brazil. Over some 60 years he produced hundreds of books, which he attributed to spirits communicating through him, and donated all proceeds to charity. He became a well-known public figure through television appearances in the late 1960s and 1970s, though his claimed abilities were also disputed by critics who questioned the authenticity of his work. André Luiz is the name given to the spirit said to have dictated this book; he is described only as a physician who once lived in Rio de Janeiro, and his identity beyond that has never been confirmed.
