Description

The Knight in the Panther’s Skin is an epic story by Georgian Shota Rustaveli. It was originally written in the twelfth century and is considered a definitive piece of work of Georgia's Golden Age, having parallels with the chivalric romances that were popular in the noble courts of High Medieval and Early Modern Europe. It tells the story of Avtandil and Tariel, two friends, who are on a quest to find the object of love, Nestan-Darejan, an allegorical embodiment of Queen Tamar who reigned as the Queen of Georgia from 1184 to 1213. Tamar was known for her beauty and intelligence, and under her rule, Georgia prospered. The poem's author, Rustaveli was close to the queen and possibly served as her treasurer. With themes of friendship, love, and loyalty, The Knight in the Panther’s Skin was so beloved in it's native country, that until the early twentieth century, it was part of the dowry of every bride.

This book has 113,393 words, and 167 pages in the PDF version. This translation by Marjory Wardrop was originally published in 1912.
