Washington Confidential is a 1951 nonfiction exposé by tabloid journalists Jack Lait and Lee Mortimer, presenting the American capital as a city of contradictions — architectural grandeur on the surface, vice and corruption underneath. Drawing on interviews with police officers, criminals, embassy staff, and government insiders, the authors claim to strip away Washington's polished official image to reveal organized crime, government excess, and moral decay. Written in the authors' characteristically brash, sensational style, it became the best-selling nonfiction book of 1951, outselling titles by the Duke of Windsor and Thor Heyerdahl.

About the Author

Jack Lait (1883–1954) was an American journalist, editor, and playwright who spent fifty years in newspapers, including a stint as a Chicago crime reporter and later as editor of the New York Daily Mirror. Lee Mortimer (1904–1963), born Mortimer Lieberman, was a New York Daily Mirror columnist, radio commentator, and nightclub producer best known for his long-running Broadway gossip column. The two collaborated on a series of bestselling "Confidential" exposés of American cities in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
