Bran mac Febail hears mysterious music and finds a silver branch of white blossom in his hall, brought by a woman from an otherworldly land who sings of a paradise across the sea, free from sickness, sorrow, and death. Inspired, Bran sets sail with a company of companions. On the voyage he meets Manannán mac Lir, the Celtic sea god, riding his chariot across the waves, who tells him of the wonders that lie ahead. Bran and his men reach the Island of Joy and the Land of Women, where they are welcomed and stay in seeming contentment - though one of the company grows homesick, setting in motion the tale's poignant close.

The tale belongs to the immram genre, a class of early Irish voyage narratives describing journeys to supernatural islands. It blends native pre-Christian mythology - the Otherworld, the sea god Manannán, and the promise of eternal youth - with Christian elements layered in by the monastic scribes who preserved it, including prophetic verses added later. A recurring theme is the distortion of time between the Otherworld and Ireland, a motif shared with other Irish tales of the Sídhe (fairy folk).

About the Author

The author is unknown. The tale was composed in Old Irish in the late 7th or early 8th century, likely by a monastic scribe working within Ireland's early medieval literary tradition, and survives through later manuscripts such as the Book of the Dun Cow and the Book of Leinster.
