A Princess of Mars
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Carthoris, son of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, loves Thuvia of Ptarth, but she is promised to another and custom forbids him from pressing his suit. When Thuvia vanishes, suspicion falls on Carthoris, pushing the cities of Barsoom to the brink of war. To clear his name and save the woman he loves, he sets out across Mars, where he crosses paths with the Lotharians, a strange and dying race who wield illusion and mental projection as weapons, conjuring phantom bowmen and controlling the savage banths of the wild.
The novel centres on illusion and telepathic projection as a form of power, alongside the rigid codes of honour and chivalry that govern Barsoomian society, and the political fragility of a world where accusation alone can ignite war.
Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author best known for his adventure and science fiction writing, which helped popularise pulp fiction in the early twentieth century.
