Baron Munchausen, a German nobleman with an outrageous flair for storytelling, narrates a series of impossible adventures as though they were plain fact — riding a cannonball, travelling to the moon, and escaping a giant fish, among other exploits. The tales began as a satire of the exaggerated travel narratives and self-glorifying military memoirs fashionable in the 18th century, loosely inspired by a real German baron known for embellishing his own war stories.

The book's comic engine is deadpan tall-tale narration: the Baron relates each absurd event in a calm, matter-of-fact voice, never once acknowledging how ridiculous it is. Beneath the humour is a send-up of boastfulness, exaggerated memoir-writing, and the travel-writing craze of the era. The text also has an unusually tangled history — expanded and altered by various hands (including a German adaptation by Gottfried August Bürger) after Raspe's original version, so what's read today is not purely his own work.

About the Author

Rudolf Erich Raspe (1736–1794) was a German-born librarian, scientist, and writer. He held academic and library posts in Germany before a series of scandals — including an accusation of theft and later a mining fraud in Scotland — forced him to flee to Britain, where he spent his remaining years. He died in Ireland in 1794.
