Set in ancient Egypt near the end of the Twentieth Dynasty, the novel follows the young prince Ramses as he prepares to succeed his aging father as pharaoh. Ambitious and reform-minded, Ramses wants to fill Egypt's depleted treasury and win the loyalty of the common people, but he finds the country's true power lies not with the throne but with the priesthood, led by the shrewd and formidable Herhor. What follows is a prolonged contest of wills between crown and temple, played out through court intrigue, religious authority, and the manipulation of knowledge as a political weapon.

Key Concepts

The novel is often read as a study of the mechanics of political power rather than a conventional historical romance. Prus researched Egyptian history, religion, and daily life extensively, and uses the setting to examine how institutions — royal and religious alike — sustain or lose authority, and how control over information and ritual can outweigh control over armies or wealth. The conflict between secular and priestly power, and the slow decline of a civilization from within, are the book's central preoccupations.

About the Author

Bolesław Prus was the pen name of Aleksander Głowacki, a Polish journalist and novelist. As a teenager he took part in the 1863 January Uprising against Russian rule, an experience that shaped much of his later thinking. He became one of the leading figures of Polish positivism, known for combining social observation with historical and philosophical depth.
