Long before he became France's most notorious gentleman thief, he was simply Ralph d'Andrésy, a headstrong young man of twenty in love with Clarice d'Étigues — a match forbidden by her father. While spying on the household, Ralph uncovers a sinister plot against Josephine Balsamo, a woman rumoured to be the daughter of the legendary Cagliostro and to possess an uncanny, ageless beauty. As Ralph is drawn deeper into the conspiracy, he finds himself caught between his feelings for Clarice, his fascination with the dangerous Josephine, and a three-way race toward a centuries-old hidden treasure.

Key Concepts

Written late in the Lupin series but set at its very beginning, this is effectively an origin story, showing the character before he adopted his famous name and persona. Leblanc leans on the real historical mystique of the 18th-century occultist Cagliostro as a framing device — a myth also used by Goethe and Dumas — to blend swashbuckling adventure with romance and intrigue. The novel is as interested in Ralph's youthful overconfidence and self-doubt as in the mystery itself, tracing the making of a legend rather than simply recounting his exploits.

About the Author

Maurice Leblanc (1864–1941) was a French novelist and short story writer born in Rouen. After abandoning legal studies, he moved to Paris to pursue literature, working for years as a journalist and writer of modest commercial success. His fortunes changed dramatically in 1905 when a magazine commissioned him to write a crime story, resulting in the character of Arsène Lupin, who would go on to define his career. Leblanc was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his services to literature.
