The Iceman Cometh
About This Book
What It's About
Set in 1912 in a run-down Manhattan saloon and rooming house, the play follows a group of destitute alcoholics who spend their days drinking and clinging to comforting illusions, or "pipe dreams," about their pasts and futures. Their routine is disrupted by the arrival of Theodore "Hickey" Hickman, a travelling salesman and old friend who usually joins them in drink but this time arrives sober, determined to force each of them to abandon their illusions and confront the truth of their lives.
Key Concepts
The play is built around the tension between illusion and truth, questioning whether self-deception is a necessary defence against despair rather than simply a weakness to be cured. It also explores alcoholism, failure, guilt, and the false promise of salvation.
