About the Author

Katherine Tingley (1847–1929) was an American social reformer and Theosophist who became leader of the American Theosophical Society after the death of William Q. Judge. In 1900 she established an international headquarters and community at Point Loma, San Diego, known as Lomaland, with a school built around education in the arts and character. Her leadership drew both devoted followers and sharp criticism, and Lomaland remains a contested chapter in the history of American utopian communities.
