A Farewell to Arms
About This Book
What It's About
Frederic Henry, a young American volunteering as an ambulance driver with the Italian army, is wounded on the Italian front and recovers in a Milan hospital. There he falls deeply in love with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. As the war turns against Italy, culminating in the chaotic retreat from Caporetto, the couple's relationship becomes bound up with Frederic's growing disillusionment with the conflict and his struggle to find a way out of it. The story is told in his own voice, in plain, restrained prose that lets emotion sit beneath the surface.
Key Concepts
The novel explores the gulf between the lofty language of patriotism and the reality of war, and how love can become both refuge and vulnerability in a world that offers little security. Fate and chance run through the book, as does the idea of a "separate peace", a private withdrawal from public duty. Its stripped-down style, which relies on short declarative sentences and understatement, became one of the most imitated in 20th-century fiction. The book drew criticism in its day for its frank treatment of an unmarried couple, and was banned in Fascist Italy for its unflattering account of the Caporetto retreat. Some later critics have also questioned whether Catherine is drawn as a fully rounded character rather than an idealised one.
