About the Site
Global Grey is a site where you can download free public domain books in PDF, epub, and Kindle ebook formats. It started around 2012 as a side project while I worked a full time job elsewhere. I found that a lot of ebook sites either focused on purely fiction, or more niche areas such as the Occult. I wanted Global Grey to be a place where people could find Sherlock Holmes books, and at the same time, pick up a copy of The Book of Ceremonial Magic, if they so wished.
I also felt that, at the time, ebooks were not afforded the same standards as print books, and were often in terrible formats, with no cover page, no table of contents, and rather haphazard spacing of paragraphs and chapters.
So that became another main aim of this site; to produce and publish ebooks that were of a good quality; that were readable, nicely laid out and well presented, and that had footnotes and illustrations correctly placed, when applicable. The majority of ebooks on the site are self-published by myself, the others are scanned copies of PDFs which I ‘tidy up’.
There are long term plans for the site and new books are added almost every day, although sometimes I do get distracted with working on other things.
None of the books on the site are DRM protected.
Right now, I am working my way through converting existing Global Grey PDFs into epubs and Kindle ebooks, so if you come across a Global Grey PDF that you want in epub or Kindle format, let me know.
I’m also open to requests – if you can’t find a particular book, again, let me know, and with my amazing skills (yes, amazing), I may be able to help you out.
Finally, I also do some editing work on the side, and so if you have anything that needs converting from any format to another format – email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we can work out a price.
I live in London with my 3 cats and 1 of my grown up sons. I have another 2 grown up sons living elsewhere and a daughter at Uni. And whilst me and my children are somewhat camera shy (apart from that photo of me in the banner at the top of the page, which honestly, I get sick of looking at), my cats have no such qualms, so here:
I’ve been working with websites since around 2000, my first site being one that dealt with conspiracies. Actually, that was my second website. My very first one was a ‘shopping’ website which didn’t make me any money but did allow me to go through the trials and errors of learning HTML and, later, CSS.
When I started this site, I was working full time at a home furnishing store. That store closed down and I was made redundant. My next job ended the same way. At that time, I was 42, had been out of the work force for a considerable amount of time, due to raising a family, and found it incredibly hard finding something else. So I decided to go self-employed and tried to make a go of the site.
It’s been progressing every year, it’s definitely had its ups and downs, and I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, but – it’s still here, 6 years on.
I have a real passion for books in general and I definitely feel blessed that I get to do this site every day. I still get excited when I have a new set of books all ready to be reformatted and I really enjoy my work.
I start work at around 5am and end at about 5pm, although I’m usually around until 7pm, so if you want to get in touch at that time, please do so.
If you decide for whatever reason you wish to contact me (and why wouldn’t you?…I’m really friendly), then you can do so at email@example.com, or use the contact form below. Please check your spam folders if you don’t receive a reply. I answer every single message I get so if you don’t get a reply within a day, please check to make sure my email hasn’t ended up in your bin or spam folder.
