Lord Jim is a 1900 novel by Joseph Conrad, and is ranked 85th on the Modern Library's list of 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. A work of psychological fiction, it tells the tale of a young British seaman (Jim) who gets a position working on board a passenger ship. After several days at sea, the ship hits something; taking on water and in danger of sinking, the Captain and the crew abandon the ship. Although the passengers are later saved, the crew are vilified for leaving them. Wracked with guilt, the book follows Jim as he tries to come to terms with his past actions.
