Lives of Alchemystical Philosophers
About This Book
What It's About
This work presents a series of biographical sketches of key figures in the history of alchemy, from legendary figures like Geber and Rhasis through medieval scholars such as Albertus Magnus and Roger Bacon, to early modern adepts like Paracelsus and John Dee. It opens with a substantial introductory essay on the true object and purpose of alchemy, and closes with a bibliography of works on hermetic philosophy. The book expands on an earlier, anonymously published 1815 work of the same title, which has been attributed to Francis Barrett.
Key Concepts
Waite argues throughout that the alchemists' true goal was not literal gold-making but the "Magnum Opus," or Great Work: a process of spiritual transmutation and inner perfection pursued through the language of chemistry. He frames this as a form of mystical "New Birth," aligning the alchemical tradition with broader currents of religious and esoteric thought rather than treating it as a forerunner of experimental science.
About the Author
Arthur Edward Waite (1857–1942) was an American-born British poet and scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on occult and esoteric subjects. He is best known today as co-creator of the Rider-Waite tarot deck.
