Flora Annie Steel (1847 - 1929) was born in Sudbury, Middlesex. She lived in India for around 20 years after her marriage in 1867 to Henry William Steel, a member of the Indian Civil Service. A lot of her books are related to life in India, and she was keenly interested in her adopted country, even pushing for educational reforms, leading to her becoming Inspectress of Government and Aided Schools in the Punjab.
