About This Book

What It's About

Paul Delroze was a child when he witnessed his father's murder at the hands of a mysterious woman, an event that has shadowed him ever since. Years later, now newly married to Élisabeth, he travels with her to her family's castle near the German border, only to make a discovery that reopens the wound: Élisabeth is the daughter of the very woman linked to his father's death. As the story unfolds against the outbreak of the First World War, Paul is forced to confront the past even as the wider conflict closes in around them, weaving personal betrayal together with the era's national tensions.

Key Concepts

The novel blends domestic mystery with wartime thriller, exploring inherited guilt, divided loyalty, and the question of whether love can survive a discovery that implicates the person you love in your own family's tragedy. It was written and set during the early months of the First World War, and its French-versus-German tensions run through the plot as much as the central murder mystery does.
