Spook Stories is a collection of twelve ghost stories, first published in 1928. It was Benson's third gathering of what he called his "spook stories", following two earlier volumes in a similar vein. The tales are set largely in ordinary English surroundings - country houses, seaside towns, quiet suburban streets - disrupted by hauntings, curses, and other unexplained supernatural intrusions.

Key Concepts

The stories share a fascination with the uncanny breaking into everyday, respectable, middle-class life rather than remote gothic settings. Many blend genuine dread with a dry, sardonic wit, and several turn on themes of guilt, revenge, or unfinished business reaching back from the dead.

About the Author

Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 – 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Born into a prominent literary and clerical family - his father was Archbishop of Canterbury - he wrote prolifically across several genres over a long career, and became especially well known for his ghost stories, admired for pairing genteel, everyday settings with real unease.
