Told through the eyes of a French scholar travelling in Spain, the story unfolds after he crosses paths with a fugitive outlaw and later hears the man's own account of his downfall. That man, Don José, was once a disciplined soldier from Navarre until he encountered Carmen, a Romani woman from Seville whose beauty, wit, and refusal to be tamed by anyone upset the order of his life entirely. As his infatuation deepens, Don José abandons his post, his honour, and eventually the law itself, drawn step by step into smuggling, violence, and a jealousy he cannot master.

Key Concepts

The novella is built around the clash between civilised restraint and untamed passion, and around fatalism — the sense, voiced by Carmen herself, that some lives are simply doomed from the start. Mérimée frames the tale as quasi-ethnography, folding in his own observations on Romani language, customs, and superstition alongside the drama, a device that lends the story an air of authenticity while also reflecting the exoticising attitudes typical of its era. Modern readers and critics have noted that Carmen's portrayal, though vivid and enduringly influential, leans on stereotypes of Romani people common to 19th-century French writing.

About the Author

Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870) was a French writer, historian, and archaeologist associated with the Romantic movement. Alongside his literary career, he served for decades as Inspector General of Historic Monuments in France, playing a key role in preserving landmarks such as Carcassonne and Notre-Dame de Paris, and was later elected to the Académie Française and appointed a senator.
