Set in the fictional coastal town of Fairport, on the north-east coast of Scotland, in the 1790s, the novel centres on Jonathan Oldbuck, the antiquary of the title - a learned, sharp-tongued bachelor obsessed with old coins, ruins and manuscripts. His unlikely friendship with a young man calling himself Lovel, who arrives in the area under a cloud of mystery, draws in a wide cast of characters: the proud but financially ruined laird Sir Arthur Wardour, his daughter Isabella, and the dignified old beggar Edie Ochiltree, whose knowledge of local history and secrets proves more useful than any book in Oldbuck's library. As the story unfolds, questions around Lovel's true identity and parentage, along with the fading fortunes of the Wardour family, drive the plot toward its resolution.

Key Concepts

The novel is as much a character study and social comedy as a mystery, gently satirising the obsessive world of antiquarian collecting through Oldbuck himself. It contrasts old and new Scotland - fading aristocratic families, rising commercial interests, and the ordinary people (fishermen, servants, beggars) who often see more clearly than their social betters. Scott also weaves in Gothic touches, including local legend and a memorable storm and shipwreck sequence, alongside his usual interest in Scottish dialect, tradition, and class.

About the Author

Walter Scott (1771–1832) was a Scottish novelist, poet and historian, trained as a lawyer before turning to writing. He is widely credited with shaping the historical novel as a form, and wrote extensively about Scotland's history, landscape and folklore.
