Animal Farm is a book by George Orwell, first published in 1945. Subtitled “A Fairy Story” by its author, it is a deceptively simple tale of a group of farm animals who overthrow their human farmer in the hope of creating a society where all animals can be free, equal, and happy. What begins as an idealistic rebellion soon deteriorates into a chilling allegory of totalitarianism, corruption, and the betrayal of revolutionary ideals. Written in the aftermath of World War II, Orwell’s novella remains one of the sharpest satires of power and propaganda in the 20th century. It draws heavily on events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the rise of Stalinism, but its warnings about the abuse of authority and the distortion of truth remain disturbingly relevant today. Beneath its fable-like simplicity lies a timeless critique of how noble visions are so easily manipulated for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many.
