Description

The Adventures of Captain Hatteras is a book by Jules Verne, first published in 1864, and the second book in the Extraordinary Voyages series. Split in two parts: The English at the North Pole, and The Field of Ice, it follows the bold and often perilous expedition of Captain John Hatteras, a determined explorer obsessed with reaching the North Pole at a time when such a journey was still shrouded in mystery. He leads the crew of the Forward into the harsh Arctic, joined by Dr. Clawbonny, a cheerful yet insightful physician who brings warmth and curiosity to the expedition, as well as loyal companions Bell and Altamont. Their journey takes them across frozen seas, through dangerous storms, and over stark polar landscapes, with each challenge testing their endurance and unity. Verne uses these moments to explore themes of courage, obsession, and the limits of human ambition, all while keeping the narrative grounded in detailed descriptions of icebound survival and early polar exploration. As the crew pushes farther north, the tension rises — not simply from the hostile environment, but from unrest within the group. Conflicts simmer as supplies dwindle and the goal seems ever more unreachable. Yet Verne balances the suspense with moments of awe, describing glaciers, auroras, and wildlife with the enthusiasm of a writer deeply invested in scientific discovery. These elements make the novel especially compelling to readers who enjoy classic adventure fiction set against real-world geography and emerging nineteenth-century exploration. This is an 1876 translation by Ward, Lock & Co.
