Gladiator is a 1930 sci-fi novel by Philip Wylie. Taking place at the turn of the 20th century, the story is about a scientist who invents a serum that gives superhuman strength and bullet-proof skin. He injects the serum into his pregnant wife, and their son, Hugo, is born with the abilities the serum provides. The book follows him as he grows to adulthood, forever hiding his powers from the world around him.
