Description

The Book of Knowledge is a book by Erra Pater, first published (in English) in the early 18th century as a translation of much older astrological and occult wisdom. It purports to be written by “Erra Pater, a Jew, doctor in astronomy and physic, born in Bethany, near Mount Olivet,” though that name is widely believed to be a pseudonym. The work was translated into English by the astrologer William Lilly. Over centuries, it circulated in many printed editions, and remains an intriguing example of pre-Enlightenment occult science and folk knowledge. This esoteric guidebook is organized in four parts, blending astrology, health, divination, and practical rural life. The first part explores how the motion of celestial bodies—the signs, planets, and constellations—affects human temperament and fate. The second part offers prognostications and folk remedies for health, including recipes in physic and surgery, rooted in the humoral theory of the body. The third part delves into physiognomy and palmistry, interpreting moles, dreams, and facial features as signs that reveal character and destiny. Finally, the fourth section functions as a farmer’s calendar: it provides perpetual weather predictions, practical advice for husbandry, and veterinary guidance for livestock.
