About This Book

What It's About

The Dhammapada is one of the most widely read and respected collections of Buddhist teachings. Presented as a series of short poetic verses attributed to the Buddha, it explores the nature of the mind, suffering, desire, wisdom, morality, and spiritual liberation. Rather than constructing a systematic philosophy, the text offers concise reflections and practical guidance on how to live with clarity, compassion, restraint, and inner peace.

The verses address everyday human struggles — anger, attachment, fear, greed, and ignorance — while encouraging mindfulness and ethical conduct as the path toward enlightenment. Its aphoristic style has made it influential far beyond Buddhism itself, and many of its teachings have entered global spiritual and philosophical thought.

Key Concepts

Central themes include karma, self-discipline, mindfulness, compassion, impermanence, and the relationship between thought and action. The text repeatedly emphasizes mastery of the mind, arguing that suffering arises from uncontrolled desire and harmful mental states. Wisdom is presented not as abstract knowledge, but as disciplined awareness expressed through ethical living.

The work also contrasts the “wise” and the “foolish,” explores the value of non-violence, and highlights detachment from worldly cravings as a route to freedom from suffering.

About the Author

F. Max Müller (1823–1900) was a German-born philologist and scholar of comparative religion who became one of the nineteenth century’s most influential interpreters of Asian religious texts for English-speaking audiences. As editor of the monumental Sacred Books of the East series, Müller helped introduce Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Islamic, and Confucian writings to a broad Western readership.
