In the Pronaos of the Temple of Wisdom
Franz Hartmann
Paracelsus (1493–1541) was a Swiss-German physician, alchemist, and philosopher whose ideas challenged the medical orthodoxy of his day and laid unexpected groundwork for modern chemistry and medicine. This book combines biography with a detailed exposition of his philosophical and occult doctrines — covering his views on the nature of matter, the human body as a microcosm of the universe, the elemental spirits, the astral body, and the spiritual dimensions of disease and healing. Hartmann draws heavily on Paracelsus's own writings, making this both an accessible introduction and a serious study.
Central themes include the Hermetic principle of correspondence between the macrocosm and microcosm, the four elemental spirits (gnomes, undines, sylphs, and salamanders), the doctrine of signatures, astral light, and the relationship between alchemy, medicine, and spiritual development. Paracelsus's theology — unorthodox and visionary — also receives substantial attention.
Franz Hartmann (1838–1912) was a German-American physician and occultist with a deep interest in Theosophy and Western esoteric tradition. He spent much of his later life researching and writing on mystical and Hermetic subjects.
