About This Book

What It's About

Written in 1920, this is Hilaire Belloc's polemical history of Europe told through the lens of the Catholic Church. Belloc's central thesis, summed up in his own phrase "Europe is the Faith, and the Faith is Europe," is that Catholic Christianity was not an influence layered onto European civilization but its very foundation. He traces this argument from the Roman Empire through the barbarian invasions, the Dark and Middle Ages, and finally to the Reformation, which he regards as a catastrophic rupture from which Europe has never fully recovered.

Key Concepts

Belloc rejects the idea that Rome "fell" to barbarian conquest, arguing instead that the Empire absorbed and Christianized the invading tribes, with the Catholic Church acting as the vessel that carried Roman order and learning through the collapse of imperial government. He frames all of European history as inseparable from this Catholic continuity, and treats the Protestant Reformation not as a reform but as a wound to European unity. The book has drawn criticism, including from later historians, for downplaying the disruptive scale of the barbarian invasions and for its unapologetically partisan framing of the Reformation.

About the Author
