Zetetic Astronomy, Earth Not a Globe is a book by Samuel Birley Rowbotham, first published in 1865. He published it under the pseudonym Parallax, and the book lays out his flat earth theory, which he called zetetic astronomy. According to Rowbotham, the earth is a flat disc which is centred at the North Pole and surrounded by a wall of ice. Furthermore the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars are all, according to this theory, a few thousand miles above the surface of the earth. Whilst he called himself at various times a chemist and a physician, Rowbotham in fact had no medical degrees. After his death in 1884, his wife continued the Society which he had founded. Following a decline in the movement after World War I, it was revived in 1956 as The Flat Earth Society.
