In 1718, Francis Hutchinson wrote 'Historical Essay', a refutation of A Compleat History of Magick, Sorcery and Witchcraft. Richard Boulton (who is assumed to be the author of the anonymously published 'A Compleat History...') then wrote this book offering his spirited 'Argument and Proof of a Diabolical Power,' and extensively citing Hutchinson to contend that his 1718 Essay avoids 'both giving Reasons to justify his Charge, as well as offering any Arguments to maintain his Cause'.
