Description

My Bondage and My Freedom is an autobiographical slave narrative written by Frederick Douglass, first published in 1855. In this compelling narrative, Douglass recounts his life as a slave, describing the harsh living conditions, his separation from his mother, and the various forms of physical and psychological abuse he witnessed and endured; his escape to freedom, and his subsequent activism. He highlights the brutal realities of slavery, the transformative power of education, and the stark differences between the North and the South. Douglass offers insightful reflections on the nature of slavery, its impact on both slaves and slaveholders, and the moral and social implications of the institution, shares his personal growth as a free man, and calls for the abolition of this unjust institution.
