Description

Joseph Balsamo (also known as The Memoirs of a Physician), is a historical novel by French author Alexandre Dumas, first published 1846-1848. It is the first of Dumas' Marie Antoinette novels, and it tells the story of a man named Joseph Balsamo, also known as Cagliostro, a controversial 18th century Italian adventurer and charlatan. The story follows Balsamo's life from his childhood in Palermo, Sicily, to his rise to fame and wealth as a charismatic and mysterious figure in the courts of Europe, to his eventual downfall and imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris. The novel is notable for its richly detailed and atmospheric portrayal of 18th century Europe and its exploration of themes such as ambition, power, and the nature of deception. It is considered a classic of French literature and is widely regarded as one of Dumas' most accomplished works. This edition includes both volumes (usually published as Joseph Balsamo and Memoirs of a Physician) and is the full unabridged version which also includes a book sometimes published separately; The Mesmerist's Victim.
