Description

Dubliners by James Joyce was first published in 1914. It is a collection of fifteen short stories depicting middle class life in Ireland. The first stories are narrated by children, and as the stories progress, the narrators become older. Many of the characters also appear again in Joyce's other work, Ulysses. The publication of the book was almost scuppered when first one, then a second, printer refused to print the book unless some passages were taken out. When Joyce turned up to collect his manuscript, the printers wouldn't give them, and burned them the next day. However, thankfully, Joyce had managed to save one copy. Eventually, the first publishers (Grant Richards) agreed to publish the book. The stories included are: The Sisters; An Encounter; Araby; Eveline; After the Race; Two Gallants; The Boarding House; A Little Cloud; Counterparts; Clay; A Painful Case; Ivy Day in the Committee Room; A Mother; Grace; and, The Dead.

Part of Anne Haight's List of Banned Books.

This book has 67,577 words, 125 pages in the PDF version, and was originally published in 1914.
