Description

Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written by Edmond Rostand in 1897. It is set in 17th century France and tells the story of Cyrano, a nobleman with a large nose, who is a gifted poet and swordsman. Despite his many talents, Cyrano is self-conscious about his appearance and believes that his nose makes him unattractive to women. The play revolves around Cyrano's unrequited love for his cousin, Roxane, who is considered one of the most beautiful women in Paris. Roxane is courted by a handsome but dim-witted cadet named Christian, who is unable to express his feelings for her. Cyrano, feeling that he can never win Roxane's love because of his appearance, offers to write letters to her on Christian's behalf, allowing him to express his love for her in a way that he never could. The play explores themes of love, appearance, and identity, as well as the power of language and expression. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece of French literature and has been adapted for various stage productions, films, and operas over the years.
